Fjordhammer Friday (9th October 2020)

The Second Edition

It feels like yesterday that I was formulating and typing out the very first Fjordhammer Friday! Time just seems to be flying by at a rate of knots this month and before we know it its bloody Christmas. Wait a minute...Bloody Christmas, sounds like a Dethklok Christmas song, don't know about you buy I'd buy that single if it ever came into being. This brings me on nicely to this week's genre focus, the gut wrenching, intestine pulling, skull splitting, ear violating brutality that is death metal! Death metal comes in many forms and like black metal has evolved over the years, fused with other styles and become, in some cases, infinitely more technical and complex. Alongside thrash and grind, traditional death metal for me is one of the standout grandfathers of modern extreme metal. One of my favourite gigs was seeing Cannibal Corpse alongside The Black Dahlia Murder at Motion in Bristol, I was drunk, clearing out pits with a mate of mine and smashed my knee off the solid concrete floor tripping over a foot after being blindsided by two guys twice the size of me. A damn good gig by death metal standards. Anyway, let's delve deep into the underground and see what my top, brain stomping, spine breaking, soul crushing death metal picks are for this week.

A Quick Note: I have found that some of these releases do feature on Spotify, this has lead me to tweak my criteria slightly. Whilst I will only be sharing the band's bandcamp and social links, if the most played song on Spotify has has under 7,500 streams  at the time of writing the post it is eligible for this weekly segment

APPARITION (๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ)

Location: Los Angeles
Record Label: Independent

I'm assuming they're a fairly new band on the scene, but from the two tracks the band have released, they are not here to fuck around! A slow and heavy combination of death and doom with low gutturals to match.

Spotlight On - Granular Transformation

Burial Remains (๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ)

Location: Drachten, Friesland
Record Label: Raw Skull Recordz

If you're not careful you'll get whiplash from the band's debut album Trinity Of Deception. An old school death metal outfit formed of members from bands such as Grim Fate and Fleshcrawl, it is a band that pulls no punches. Fast, heavy and sounds like a revving chainsaw.

Spotlight On - March Of The Undead

Death Courrier (๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท)

Location: Patras, Western Greece
Record Label: Transcending Obscurity Records

A hefty combination of thrash and death metal from these Greek hell raisers. Not going to lie, Bill's (Vocals) vocal style reminds me of Nathan Explosion from Metalocalypse, which is pretty awesome! Despite being around since 1987, with a hiatus from 1993 to 2009, it still sounds fresh but with that original old school sting.

Spotlight On - Immune To Burial

Pyre (๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ)

Location: St. Petersburg
Record Label: Memento Mori

From the vast land that is Russia, comes some Asphyx style death metal. Slow, brooding and moody, Chained To Ossuaries is a brutally heavy monster of an album that gives out the aura of the apocalypse. Which is rather apt, considering the current situation of the world...

Spotlight On - Wreath Of Crucifix

๐Ÿ”ŠTHIS WEEK'S HEADLINER๐Ÿ”Š

Funeral Leech (๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ)

Location: New York
Record Label: Carbonized Records

Ominous and dark, I hint a bit of black metal influence when it comes to the atmosphere in this one. Packing huge riffs that make me want to be in the middle of a pit getting smashed around by literal cavemen. Following in the great American death metal tradition of being totally uncompromising.

Spotlight On - Downpour

That wraps up this week's Fjordhammer Friday! If you don't thoroughly disrespect your surroundings after checking out these talented bands, I won't be angry, just very disappointed. Stay tuned to Fjordhammer Music for updates, reviews and more!
