Low, Slow, & In A Hazy Glow

With a plethora of more confusing rules, regulations and restrictions, alongside Manchester in open revolt against the Government, it has been a bother naff week in the UK. I'm not going to dwell on that though as 2020 is continuing to deliver on the music front, with some massive albums coming out that will make my album of the year choice very hard. This week I am feeling the low and slow, big riffs, über fuzz, and earth shattering bass. The foundations laid down in yesteryear by the immortal Black Sabbath, the genre has grown and evolved into many things but one thing has always remained the same, and that is you can never have too much fuzz. There is always magic involved when I put on doom/stoner metal, the slow, deep rumble puts me into a relaxing trance conjuring up images of mystic beings in an array of colours. I always thought that with the Hobbits in the Lord Of The Rings smoking all their pipe weed, Doom and all its variants would be the music for them. I mean, I can totally imagine old Bilbo off his nut, tripping to Electric Wizard. Man, that would have made his one hundred and eleventh birthday look a bit stranger. Hell, even Treebeard and the Ents are in on it because they talk and move so slowly! Anyway, fantastically bizarre imaginings aside, doom/stoner has had a massive influence on Witchwood Wizard & The Psychic Yeti, and is a genre that is super fun to play as a guitarist, as you can just lock in with the groove and be away with those fairies that wear boots. So, without any further ado, here's my top picks for doom/stoner.

Witchhelm (🇺🇸)

Location: Akron, Ohio

Record Label(s): Wyrmwood Records

Some of the most eargasmic doom I've listened too over the past few months. Eerie and mystical, but with huge weighty riffs packed into a spacious atmosphere. Looking through the band's back catalogue there is something for everyone in there.

Spotlight On - Invocations

Cosmic Relic (🇺🇸)

Location: Lyndon Station, Wisconsin

Record Label(s): Unsigned

Despite being from Wisconsin, these guys pack the big riffs alongside a real southern groove and sound. Can definitely feel a lively soul emitting its cosmic vibes in all three tracks of their debut EP.

Spotlight On - Conspiracy

Mage (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿)

Location: Leicester, England

Record Label(s): Witch Hunter Records

English doom with attitude! These guys don't mess around, straight up bringing the thunder with an absolute proto-Sabbath riff fest with true northern grit. I was head banging to every song I heard!

Spotlight On - Key To The Universe

Groan (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿)

Location: London, England

Record Label(s): Soulseller Records

Very much a mixture of Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats style vocals and Green Lung style riffing, Groan do everything but make you groan. Really harnessing that 70s occult rock undertone with the retro production to match, definitely a band that need more attention in my eyes.

Spotlight On - The Sleeping Wizard

🔊THIS WEEK'S HEADLINER 🔊

Captain Caravan (🇳🇴)

Location: Egersund, Norway

Record Label(s): Cursed Tongue Records

Groove laden elements of doom, stoner and prog all come together in one, earth shattering bundle in the shape of Captain Caravan. The Norwegians have some weight riffs that just hype you up and get you moving!

Spotlight On - Shun The Sun
