The anonymous three that make up Sinistral King have blended what they know from their other bands and awoken a monster in the shape of a serpent! With blasting, ruthless riffs interwoven with mysterious chants and atmospherics that are sure to excite you. The anonymity of the band members definitely adds to the mystery of the album, making it all sound more ominous and dark. With crushing death metal elements accompanied by harsh black metal elements, for me this has been one of my favourite discoveries this year!

Musically, there is an equal blend of all sorts of influences, mainly from the bands that the anonymous members came from, but the biggest thing that stands out for me is the deep chanting that can be heard in various sections throughout the album. I'm very much reminded of Litourgiya era Batushka (I should probably check if that whole situation has been resolved but that is for another time), with the deep low notes resonating in the background, creating a dark and epic soundscape that has captured my imagination. There are female choral parts that drift in and out that also have the same effect, but in a more floating, ghostly way. The riffs are a well crafted combination of black and death metal, creating an uncompromising and intimidating soundtrack to the end of the world. I genuinely believe that this album could be the soundtrack to the apocalypse, with ritualistic imagery conjured up in my mind from the intros of Nahemoth and Isheth Zenunim. I think one element that I really like about the album is the vocals, the harsh, low growls appeal to me in so many ways and that's why I like the crossover of death and black metal. One thing I also admire is how the band have made each song, averaging about 8 minutes sound like a symphonic piece with loads of intricate movements and phases. It makes for intriguing and immersive listening experience as there is a dark, ominous, ornate grandeur to the songs. Overall, it is an incredibly intricate and well constructed album demonstrating supreme capability in the black and death metal crossover.

The production of this album in my opinion is epic. All the elements seem to lock in so cohesively it's creates such a strong and impressive presence throughout the album that I can't help but admire it. The guitar tones are raw, but you can hear the notes clearly ring through the distortion. Underneath those is a distorted and crunchy bass that reinforces the guitars to make a solid foundation for the vocals to spew forth the evil in the lyrics with devastating efficiency. The kicks are thick and thunderous filling the low end with a snare that snaps through the mix very aggressively. My favourite parts are how the choral vocals are layered to make it feel like the songs are closing in around you and engulfing your soul. Overall an incredibly well mixed album that packs raw intensity alongside phenomenal precision.

If you fancy some ominous black/death metal fresh from the apocalypse, uncoil the serpent in your ears and give Sinistral King a listen!
