The father's of Norwegian black metal have once again risen from the dark obscurity to release a hellfire erupting volcano of a new single! After being teased for six months by the band, we can finally indulge our lust for one of the world's most infamous bands with Worthless Abominations Destroyed. For me, if this is the standard of the first single off of upcoming album Daemon, then the standard has been set very high, and I am all aboard the hype train for this one!
Musically, the sound is ver reminiscent of the band's 1997 EP Wolf's Lair Abyss. With the operatic vocal style of Csihar being used to full effect. The song that comes to mind off of that EP that Worthless Abominations Destroyed reminds me of the most is I Am Thy Labyrinth, mainly because of how the riffs have been composed and they way they're being played. Enough reminiscing though, I'll take the song for what it is and that is an awesome black metal song first and foremost. From beginning to end it is a chaotic and evil song that packs everything we love about Mayhem into it. With shades of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas being cast over the top of it, it feels like old school Mayhem is back and just like other fans I've seen in the comments, I'm loving it. Every riff seems to perfectly roll into one another giving the song this unbelievably amazing ebb and flow, which is not something I say often about black metal songs. Vocally, Csihar sounds the best I have heard him, in both harsh and clean vocals. The almost sermon like, spoken vocals over the top of the chaotic band has a very eerie, haunting and doom filled vibe to it that gets me really excited to see if the rest of the album is like this, because if it is then all of us are in for a treat and probably one of the best Mayhem albums in years. Overall, the song is a prime example of why Mayhem will always be the number one black metal band in the world, its fast, uncompromising and brutality is exactly what traditional black metal should be about and once again Mayhem have hit the nail on the head.
Production wise, while its not the proper old school, rough and raw production that we now and love about De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, it still packs a pretty raw punch. The guitar tones have this really nice valve amp clarity in the high end, which helps build the atmosphere of the song, I like that they haven't over done the reverb either, otherwise the harshness of the riffs would be lost I feel. As far as the low end goes, the bass tone is gritty and distorted yet full of tone to support the guitars. I feel that that sometimes gets lost in proper old school black metal recordings as the kick drums tend to dominate the low end (see Great Work Of Ages from the band's 2007 release Ordo Ad Chao to see what I mean), so for me its good that the bass has this prominence in the mix. There is a surprising amount of space in this single too, everything has its place and the vocals sit so comfortably on top of all the instruments you can tell that this is a band that has their sound well worn in like an old boot. Overall, the mix is raw and energetic, which adds to my excitement and anticipation for the rest of the album.
It's great to see Mayhem come back stronger than ever and still belting out black metal epics after 35 years! If you haven't already do yourself a favour and check out Worthless Abominations Destroyed now!
