Australia seem to have this habit of creating awesome and crazy death metal bands, maybe its the heat or maybe its because every other animal wants to kill you we will never know but Disentomb are up there with some of the best Australian metal exports in my opinion. They vacuum pack the the brutality in this album as it sucks the life out of your beaten and withering corpse. With its overwhelming sense of foreboding doom and destruction the long awaited follow up album to 2014's Misery is sure to satisfy all your brutal death metal needs and more.

Musically, it does seem to carry on from 2014's sophomore effort Misery. Unlike most brutal death metal though, this album is slower, with a focus on some of the more melodic aspects of riff writing. While there is all the stereotypical chugging riffs, there is a bigger effort on some of the more atmospheric aspects which is quite refreshing in my opinion. With this in mind I think this is where the band have evolved their sound from Misery, as it is not an all out brutal assault, there is time to contemplate with this album. In my opinion contrasting slower elements with faster elements makes each type of section more effective, so when its gets fast it has a lot more gumption to it and when it gets slower it feels a lot heavier if that makes sense. This is something that Disentomb have done really well with this album. One thing that is very noticeable on this album is the doom feel of some of the songs, Invocation In The Cathedral Of Dust being the main example of this slower, heavier droning riff and slow tempo sounding equally as brutal as the faster songs. This combination of death and doom styles makes this album full of interesting twists and turns for me as you never know what the next song is going to sound like (unless you've listened to it a few times). Another thing that stands out to me is the more melodic drone riffs that appear in some of the songs over the top, they just add this real layer of atmosphere that I felt Misery was missing. What is the most surprising thing about this album is the acoustic outro Withering, we've just gone through all 7 layers of Dante's Hell Inferno and this slow, almost peaceful outro feels like a mourning track for your soul, it really caught me out but I really like it. Overall, it's a very well written album with twists and turns throughout its maze like structure but all enjoyable listening.

There is a noticeable step up in production quality with this album compared to Misery that is instantly recognisable. Everything sounds a lot clearer, especially with the bass, you can hear every harmonic and tone so well that you can really appreciate the bass parts properly, as you know the bass just disappears into the abyss of the low end in many brutal death metal records. With this in mind the bass tone is dialled in amazingly and you can hear every pop and ping which I'm living for. I love the massive space that this album feels, which again is a step up from Misery which felt very enclosed and cramped. The drums also sound super tight and executed to perfection, I think the snare tone is my favourite as its not this eternally ringing oddity that ruins the cymbals, definitely a close resemblance to a shotgun. The guitar tones are thick, chunky and heavy which is to be expected in a brutal death metal record. The vocal effects are an interesting one as in some songs you get this brief moment of vocal panning that makes it sound like doom is being thrust in your ears from all around you. The vocals have been really well recorded and the reverb is my favourite part about them, I can't explain why but it hits all the right markers for me. All in all, I love the mix of this album as it really showcases the bands full capabilities.

Another epic brutal death metal album from another awesome Australian band, if you're up for big riffs and grooves check out The Decaying Light!
