Review
Rating (out of 5🤘): 🤘🤘🤘🤘.5 (For Both)
Hailing from the combined lands of Mexico and The Netherlands, Asagraum is raw traditional black metal at its finest, delivered by some of the most Brutal women I have ever had the opportunity to listen to! Asagraum draw absolute power and crushing devastation from the darkest of the black metal voids. Fans of Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Kvltist and Sargeist will be sure to love this truly international black metal coven with ease!
Musically the band channel everything from Mayhem to Sargeist. With the project originally being a Netherlands/Norway collaboration the band have had plenty of influences to draw from with both nations having a strong black metal scene. From my perspective this reinforces their brand of hard hitting traditional black metal. The self proclaimed "satanic black metal coven" a raw and ruthless on these two songs. I think my favourite one out of the two has to be They Crawl From The Broken Circle, with its brief but eerie intro reminds me a bit of Emperor or Darkthrone, specifically Kathaarian Life Code, which I am really loving. They Crawl From The Broken Circle also has a more doomy and melodic section after the initial onslaught that sets up the next onslaught of speeding and savage riffs. Abomination's Altar is just all out speed and blast beats, there are no prisoners to be taken with this track! With both these tracks in mind, it feels like a departure from the band's more atmosphere driven debut album 2017's Potestas Magicum Diaboli, and given that these singles sound harder and faster than the bands previous release this can only be a good thing in regards to hyping up the album. There also seems to be more death metal-esque elements in these songs, with stronger and chunkier riffs similar to those found on Gorgoroth's 2016 release, Radiax Malorum. Even though I have name dropped some black metal legends in regards to the band's sound, but I feel Asagraum has dragged that sound into the 21st century kicking, screaming and bleeding. Overall the songs are ruthless and unforgiving and I think Satan himself should be scared of this black metal coven!
Production wise, both singles are all out rawness and brute force. The drums pound you like field guns in the bass frequencies and the guitars screech their way into existence in the high end. The bass sits perfectly between the two. The guitar tones are very well balanced in the mids and treble frequencies so it allows the bass to come forth and bludgeon us with its low notes and locking in with the kick drum. With black metal production becoming ever so slightly cleaner and more polished these days Asagraum have beaten a bit of rawness back into it. Both songs are really well mixed and produced but the stand out for me is the vocals on They Crawl From The Broken Circle with a harsh vocal fading out/layered with a cleaner vocal just before the slower groove section of the song gives me chills.
Its refreshing to see strong female figures in the black metal scene and I'm expecting big things from
Asagraum in the future. Check them out on Spotify, 2017's Potestas Magicum Diaboli, is an epic album and you won't be disappointed!
