The Metal Scholar's Weekly Listening List (9th February 2021)

At Least The Days Are Getting Longer

As I sit here looking at the snow flurrying down and failing to settle, longing for another snow day, things are starting to weigh upon my mind. I had a memory pop up yesterday making it officially a year since my last gig, Sabaton at Wembley Arena 8th February 2020. One of only two gigs I saw that year, the other being Slipknot in January. It is soul crushing, as many of you will agree with me, seeing the memories from last year slowly start to pop up and you find yourself reminiscing to previous lockdowns when things weren't as bad as they are now. I think that is a personal tragedy for everyone that we long for a simpler time of only one covid variant. It can be easy to get bogged down in all the chaos that has gone on recently, and finding the right distractions to keep your mind engaged is becoming harder in this increasing groundhog day time lapse. At least the days are getting longer, not warmer unfortunately but at least longer, so we can start looking forward to spring. As much as I love the cold dark winter, right now I would love nothing more than to sit out in the garden with a book and lap up the sunlight. Anyway, reflecting and longing aside, bands continue to churn out releases of the highest quality despite no tours to back it up. I'm amazed that 2021 is bringing the thunder and aiming to top 2020. So, without further ado, this week's lists!

Throwback Of The Week

This week's throwback is a certified doom metal classic. I've been trying to get back into my doom listening as I aim to relax more and get lost in a world of fuzz and mysticism. Taking it slow always feels more heavy to me, but also more trance inducing as you succumb to the slow and steady grooves of deep, grumbling basses and deep, pulsing drums. So, this week's throwback is;

Electric Wizard (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿) - Dopethrone (Rise Above Records), Doom/Stoner Metal
