Two titanic Southern rock forces have combined over quarantine and created an absolute beast of a track, with an even more important message! With the joint talents of the mighty lads from Hamilton, Monster Truck, and the energetic boys from Kentucky, Black Stone Cherry, coming together to form a new supergroup named The Cherry Truck Band. This song came about through a series of joint livestreams that I had the pleasure of watching a few of and seeing this epic song start to form. I was very excited when the project was announced and thought it was another demonstration of how BSC and Monster Truck have kept their fans engaged over the global lockdown period. The song is punchy, full of dirty heavy blues riffs and some phenomenal duet vocals. For me, the next time someone says supergroup to me I will think of The Cherry Truck Band, because in my opinion this is how it should be done! I think I can speak for a lot of the BSC and Monster Truck fanbases when I say we'd snap up an EP of this gigantic combination of Southern rock heroes! With all the proceeds from this song going towards Black Lives Matter and The Boys And Girls Club Of America, this song is a shining beacon for the fight against inequality and injustice.
Musically, it has all the classical elements for a truly gritty southern rock rager. I think the song is a great blend of both bands signature styles, a solid and strong combination of BSC's bluesy funk and melody writing with Monster Truck's groove and true grit. There is definitely a lot of soul to the song, that not only makes you feel warm inside, to stand up and make Love become the Law, but to also do it in the most rock way possible by pumping your fist and head banding like crazy. Love Become Law definitely got me up out of my seat multiple times wildly air drumming in the style of John Fred. Combining all that we love about the new heavy blues rock that we know and love; big riffs, anthem style choruses and two shredding guitar solos, this is a collaborative effort that just works. A lot of collaborations fall flat because of the differences in artistic style, but for a song this good to come about so quickly, you can feel the chemistry between all the guys working on this to achieve one common goal. A protest song that is truly unforgettable, and as far as protest songs go, I think it was summed up perfectly by Monster Truck frontman Jon Harvey;
“This is our anthem in solidarity to those fighting for basic rights. This is our voices saying, ‘We love you, we hear you, we respect and love you’. Black lives matter. Without the impact of black culture, there would be no modern music, period. Respect, protect and celebrate diversity. Our world depends on it.” (Harvey, Munro, 2020)
This is backed up by Ben Wells;
“This song is about uniting, being and living as one, and most importantly, loving each and every person that walks this planet. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did creating it for you!” (Wells, Munro, 2020)
The world was truly turned upside down with the pandemic and even more so when during this people went out en masse to support the BLM matter movement in the middle of a viral pandemic to campaign for BASIC human rights. Even the song has an absolute epic quality to it, the very important message of unity and combined effort to bring about change is so powerful and I hope it will be a real anthem in the rock and metal community to help keep the changes for the better coming! Overall, Love Become Law does exactly what is says on the tin, inspires me to be part of the change for the better and do it in a way that everyone can truly understand, through the power of music, in my opinion anyway. A straight up Southern rock classic, written perfectly, with a very important message that should be heeded by all.
As someone who has produced a few songs and a currently unreleased album in the three months of lockdown, I am so curious as to how the production was achieved for this song. Was it just sending files over Google Drive or some other method? Either way, the song sounds absolutely massive, I feel like I'm stood in a stadium with this one. The drums have such a great punch to them with a solid kick and a tight snap on the snare. The bass tones sound gritty and chunky, filling all the low end so the guitars can sit on top of a solid foundation. The guitar tones are signature for both bands, Chris and Ben of BSC have a very distinctive blues overdriven tone, where as Jeremy's from Monster Truck is a lot grittier in that sense. Both sets of tones are balanced perfectly with the keys parts weaving in between the two. The duet vocals just hold power and this spine tingling presence, Chris in one ear and Jon in the other surrounded by some awesome backing harmonies, it gives you a really warm feeling. Overall an insane production job on this song has been achieved, gritty and huge, I can't help but wax lyrical about it!
This song is a stand out one in these strange times we live in, with a seemingly endless stream of pain and suffering. I enjoyed Love Become Law for the kicks rock song it is, showcasing some of the best from both bands and because of the important message it has. An outstanding effort from all involved!
